I usually try to stay away from politics on our blog, but in this case I am curious to hear what those outside of the Netherlands have to say.
The Dutch ani-islam, anti-immigrant politician Geert Wilders is going to be speaking at one of the 9/11 anti-mosque rallies today at 3:00 p.m. in New York. Wilders advocates banning the Quran, taxing Muslim women who wear head scarves and expelling Muslims from the country.
He has helped to push through a lot of legislation that has caused me and many other foreigners here a lot of stress, money and time over the last 8-9 years. He won a lot of votes in the last election in June and there is a high chance that he will hold a lot of power with very little responsibility in the yet to be formed new Dutch government.
You won’t be able to miss him on TV, he is the bleached blonde guy. Here is a Wikipedia link and and a link to Wilders’ blog.
So far he has managed to stay under the political radar internationally, but this may finally change if the Netherlands is perceived to be heading towards fascism. Possibly the international attention will wake people up here, especially those worried about international perception and investment in the Netherlands.
I am hoping that he does his usual hypocritical ranting and raving with little logic. For example, he wants to ban many things and then hides behind protecting free speech and considers himself a “freedom fighter”.
P.S. If you are wondering why I am interested in your view, it is also because we no longer receive much foreign world news here, i.e., BBC Word, CNN, etc.
