Problemen

1. Too wide of a seat, he slips around.

6. The chair must not be heavy and difficult to manoeuvre when it is in use. It must be easy for the caregiver partner to use because of back problems (the partner has a doctors note).
7. Manual stand-pivot transfers must be possible. Although we plan to use a ceiling lift at home, there will be many times that it will not possible when urgency is needed. Manual transfers are needed for all family visits, all respite care and during all vacations.
8. It must be possible to submerge the chair in water if needed for a bath in place of a shower. Placing the chair in a bath is needed  for many family visits, some respite care and during many vacations.

15. De magnetische lader is zeer gemakkelijk te bevestigen (zie nadelen hieronder).

1. Activating the chair by pressing both up arrows for 2 seconds took longer and was too complicated for caregivers.
2. It was too difficult for caregivers to fold the armrests up or turn the front closure downwards. They were pulling on the security catch at the hinging point on the frame, instead of pushing on it. This will cause problems with caregivers who do not always follow instructions well.
3. The front closures on the armrests hindered self showering and drying and also toilet use.
4. The armrests cannot be used as a support during manual transfers when urgency is needed.They do not provide enough support when put downward because they do not lock in a downward position.
5. During transfers it was difficult to put on the brakes without strong shoes. The caregiver partner and sometimes other caregivers do not wear strong shoes in the home. It would take too long to change shoes when urgency is needed.
6. The seat width is too wide at 46 cm. It should be about 40.5 cm so that he does not slide around and has enough upper body support. When he is busy washing or on the toilet he is not able to hold the armrests and instead uses the armrest to help support his trunk.

   We also cannot think of any situations that the tilting function would be used. We also have a preference to have only needed functionality, so that we do not increase costs that might be better used on other more needed functionality such as the HandiMove Body Support system and ceiling lift and the wash and dry toilet. In short, the only advantages we can find of having an electric shower chair are for the moving upwards / downwards functionality for caregivers when doing shoes and socks, but we do not think it is worth the extra cost and maintenance.
10. The chair has a large footprint. It will be in the way in the bathroom for other ADL activities that are also important. Because the footprint is so large it can also not be used anywhere else but in the bathroom and bedroom.

12. The push handles stick out too far on the sides and get caught on caregiver clothing and accessories that are needed in the bathroom such as the soap dispenser, shower caddy and standing bar/towel rack.
13. The chair does not fit with the current toilet grab bar installation. In order to use the chair we needed to remove the grab bar that is used on a daily basis for transfers and support while using the toilet.
14. The chair does not fit with the current toilet installation. When the chair is at a normal height to use the toilet the toilet lid and tank prevent it from being moved back far enough over the toilet bowl. When the chair is raised high it goes back further, but the stand pipe prevents it from being moved back far enough (see photos below).
15. It does not fit well over the toilet bowl and we think it will be unhygienic for toilet use. We had planned that the chair would be used in the morning for the toilet to reduce the number of transfers. Other times during the day it was planned that the chair would not be used for the toilet. We also “think” that there will be problems when using the chair with toilets that have behind the wall tanks because the back legs stick out too far. Most of our family and many hotels use behind the wall tanks, and thus the chair would not be usable.
16. The front caster “wings” are in the way for manual stand-pivot transfers and make it unsafe and difficult. Although we plan to use a ceiling lift at home, there will be many times that it will not possible when urgency is needed. Manual transfers are needed for all family visits, all respite care and during all vacations.

24. Overall the chair is much too passive. It is caregiver focused and not user focused. We would like that he can transfer from the bed to the chair and be active enough to do his normal activities independently in the morning before he uses the toilet and shower, for example making a cup of coffee, breakfast and reading news and e-mail. With a lightweight manual shower chair that he can move independently in, he should be able to do these activities. It will also lessen the amount of transfers that are needed in the morning leaving him much more energy for more important things during the day like his painting and physical therapy. When he uses the toilet and shower he wants that he can be independent and does not need to have caregivers do everything for him. We have made almost everything accessible in the bathroom so that he is independent, for example, toothbrush, wash clothes, soap, etc. He does all washing independently and only needs caregivers for helping him to help with clothing, drying and transfers. Caregivers often do not try to listen to him and they ask many questions that they should not need to if he can do more things himself. It causes him a lot of stress, and as a result he has epileptic seizures. In short, we feel that this chair is “overkill” and makes him too handicapped and takes away all of his independence and puts it all in the hands of caregivers. This is something we absolutely do not want and would be bad for his emotional and physical well being. We also feel that it will be dangerous for him, especially when caregivers do not follow instructions properly. Although we provide training, there is a full agenda already with the wheelchair, transfers and epilepsy protocol. The complicated chair will only add to the complexity and possible problems with caregivers and we do not see enough advantages to take that risk.

6. De zitbreedte is te breed op 46 cm. Het zou ongeveer 40,5 cm moeten zijn, zodat hij niet glijdt en genoeg bovenlichaam ondersteuning heeft. Als hij bezig is met wassen of om het toilet, kan hij de armleuningen niet vasthouden en in plaats daarvan de armleuning gebruiken om zijn romp te ondersteunen.
7. Het zit uitsparing is te breed en de opening is in de verkeerde positie achterin de stoel. Een smalle uitsparing is nodig, zodat hij niet doorkomt, en een opening aan de zijkant is nodig zodat hij met zijn rechterhand toegang heeft.

We zijn bezorgd dat dit problemen met verzorgers zal veroorzaken die niet altijd instructies volgen en ze zullen proberen de kantelfunctie te gebruiken wanneer ze niet zouden moeten.
   We kunnen ook niet aan situaties denken dat de kantelfunctie zou worden gebruikt. We hebben ook de voorkeur om alleen de nodig functionaliteit te hebben, zodat we niet meer kosten verhogen die beter kunnen worden gebruikt bij andere, meer benodigde functionaliteit, zoals het HandiMove Body Support systeem en plafondlift, en het was- en droog toilet. Kortom, de enige voordelen die we kunnen hebben van een elektrische douchestoel zijn voor de bewegende omhoog / omlaag functionaliteit voor verzorgers bij het doen van schoenen en sokken, maar we vinden niet dat het de extra kosten en onderhoud is waard.
10. De stoel heeft een grote voetafdruk. Het zal in de weg staan in de badkamer voor andere ADL-activiteiten die ook belangrijk zijn. Omdat de voetafdruk zo groot is, kan het ook niet elders worden gebruikt, maar in de badkamer en slaapkamer.
11. De stoel is erg zwaar en moeilijk te manoeuvreren wanneer het in gebruik is. Het zal te moeilijk zijn voor de verzorger partner om te gebruiken vanwege rugproblemen (de partner heeft een arts brief).
12. De duwhandgrepen steken te ver aan de zijkanten en worden gevangen op de verzorger kleding en accessoires die nodig zijn in de badkamer, zoals de zeepdispenser, douchecaddy en staandebeugel / handdoekrekken.
13. De stoel past niet bij de huidige toiletbeugel. Om de stoel te kunnen gebruiken, moesten we de toiletbeugel verwijderen die dagelijks wordt gebruikt voor transfers en ondersteuning tijdens het gebruik van het toilet.
14. De stoel past niet bij de huidige toiletinstallatie. Wanneer de stoel op een normale hoogte is om het toilet te gebruiken, verhindert het toilet deksel en tank het ver genoeg te verplaatsen over het toilet pot. Als de stoel hoog wordt opgeheven, gaat het verder terug, maar de standpijp voorkomt dat het ver genoeg wordt verplaatst (zie foto’s hieronder).
15. Het past niet goed over de toiletpot en we denken dat het onhygiënisch voor toiletgebruik zal zijn. We hadden gepland dat de stoel in de ochtend voor het toilet zou worden gebruikt om het aantal transfers te verminderen. Andere keren tijdens de dag werd gepland dat de stoel niet voor het toilet zou worden gebruikt. We denken ook dat er problemen zullen zijn bij het gebruik van de stoel met toiletten die achter de muurtanks liggen omdat de achterpoten te ver uitsteken. Het grootste deel van onze familie en veel hotels hebben aachter de muurtanks, en dus zou de stoel niet bruikbaar zijn.

20. Service en onderhoud is alleen toegestaan door daartoe door Lopital geautoriseerde personen. We hebben de voorkeur aan alles zelf te onderhouden. We zijn ook bezorgd dat Loopital service niet veel beschikbaar is in andere landen waar we naar reizen.
21. De stoel dient minimaal 1 keer per jaar periodiek geinspecteerd en onderhouden te worden. We hebben al veel apparaten die dienen te worden onderhouden en willen geen meer onderhoud toevoegen, tenzij het absoluut noodzakelijk is voor veiligheid of ADL-functionaliteit.
22. De stoel dient uitsluitend te worden bediend door voldoende geïnstrueerd en deskundig personeel Dit is niet mogelijk omdat er veel zorgverleners zijn en de trainingstijd is beperkt.
23. De stoel dient te worden gebruikt in een klinische omgeving. en we leven niet in een klinische omgeving.
24. Over het algemeen is de stoel veel te passief. Het is verzorger gericht en niet gericht op de gebruiker. Wij willen dat hij van het bed naar de stoel kan transfer  en actief zijn om zijn normale activiteiten zelfstandig in de ochtend te doen voordat hij het toilet en douche gebruikt, bijvoorbeeld een kopje koffie, ontbijt en het lezen van nieuws en e-mail . Met een lichtgewicht handbewogen douchestoel dat hij zelfstandig kan verplaatsen, zou hij deze activiteiten kunnen doen. Het zal ook de hoeveelheid transfers verminderen die nodig zijn in de ochtend, waardoor hij veel meer energie voor meer belangrijke dingen tijdens de dag, zoals zijn schilderij en fysiotherapie. Als hij het toilet en douche gebruikt, wil hij dat hij onafhankelijk kan zijn en hoeft geen verzorgers alles voor hem te doen. We hebben bijna alles in de badkamer toegankelijk gemaakt, zodat hij onafhankelijk is, bijvoorbeeld tandenborstel, washandjes, zeep, enz. Alles wassen zich zelfstandig en heeft alleen verzorgers nodig om hem te helpen bij kleding, drogen en transfers. Verzorgers vaak niet proberen om hem te luisteren en ze vragen veel vragen die ze niet zou willen doen als hij meer kan doen zichzelf. Het veroorzaakt hem veel stress, waardoor hij epileptische aanvallen heeft. Kortom, we voelen dat deze stoel “overkill” is, waardoor hij te gehandicapt wordt en alle onafhankelijkheid wegneemt en alles in de handen van verzorgers legt. Dit is iets dat we absoluut niet willen en zou slecht zijn voor zijn emotionele en lichamelijke welzijn. We voelen ons ook dat het voor hem gevaarlijk zal zijn, vooral wanneer verzorgers de instructies niet goed volgen. Hoewel we trainen, is er al een volledige agenda met de rolstoel, transfers en epilepsieprotocol. De ingewikkelde stoel zal alleen de complexiteit en eventuele problemen met verzorgers toevoegen en we zien niet genoeg voordelen om dat risico te nemen.
