Pros / Cons after testing

This was the second stalift that we rented. I think it was originally made by a German company, and it is now unclear who actually makes it. We could never really see if this lift would work well because the sling it was delivered with was completely unworkable. It was big and went under the armpits and caused a huge amount of pressure on his affected left arm which caused a lot of pain. It was also very difficult for him to hold onto and gave no easy way when using one hand. The footplate was too high and difficult for him to keep his feet on and the leg support had no belt. THe manual leg spreader got in the way and the legs got in the way because they would not fit well around the toilet. This definitely did not work.

Pros / Cons before testing

Good support with StandUp-sling with extra support under the hips. Don’t like that the footplate is not removable and that it does not fold for transport, but can be disassembled with tools. Very heavy.

Pros / Cons after testing

Overall a nice lift, but the footplate was too large and would not fit between or under the wheelchair and made it so it was too far away to stand properly. We were told that there will be a new model coming out in early 2017, the Raiser 205(?), and the sales person will check to see if it might have better possibilities for the footplate. We liked that the mast is tilted backward, because this seemed to allow for a more natural raising motion. Overall, we liked working with Molift, and would consider them for other equipment needs.

Handicare MiniLift 160 electrical (EE)

Options

Can be used with the ThoraxSling (possibly with seat support), CalfStrap (not sure if needed), SlingBarWrap MiniLift (not sure if needed). Make sure to get Linak external charger (needed to charge apart from device)

Pros / Cons before testing

Simple and easy to use. Has good support with a good ThoraxSling, that can also secure affected arm and has an optional seat support. Good controls, with computer diagnostics. Small footprint. Not sure if it can be used as a gait trainer by removing the foot plate, but I think so. Like that it is foldable.

Options

Pros / Cons before testing

Good adjustments, controls, etc. Like that it can be used for gait training by removing the foot plate and is foldable without tools for transport. Good sling options for support. Like that it comes with 2 batteries. Good customer service and parts online.

Pros / Cons after testing

This was the third stalift that we rented, which was tested for a few months. Overall this lift works okay, but not really good. The thorax sling works much better than the other type that caused too much pressure under the armpits. THe flootplate dimensions were very good for fitting between the footrests of his wheelchair. It would be better not to have the high edge in the back of the footplate so it was easier to get his affected foot off after the transfers. The leg supports cause a lot of pain while standing because his affected leg turns inside and comes in contact with the pin used to hold on the calf strap. The calf strap helped a little, but the design does not allow it to be held tightly. When ot being used there is no way to secure the calf strap and it is constantly being misplaced. The padding on the leg supports is also very hard, especially when his leg turns in the middle area. We tried adjusting the leg supports, the mast height, and using it with and without the support belt, but none of them worked. We called from Joerns to see if there are any other options for the leg supports, but there are not. Overall, we liked working with Joerns, and would consider them for other equipment needs.

Liko Sabina II (Hill-Rom)

Comfort Slingbar with ComfortVest Model 95

Sabina has 2 types of sling bars. The most common is the narrow sling bar (Slingbar 350) which is used with the Liko SupportVest or Liko SafetyVest. For pressure-sensitive armpits use the Comfort Slingbar and ComfortVest. Sabina can also, to a limited extent, be used as a lift for lifting sitting patients (not sure if it would be possible for lifting from the floor). Would need Comfort Slingbar and ComfortVest.

Pros / Cons before testing

Like that it is well suited to someone with hemiparesis. Like the vest, leg support, calf straps s and hand hold. Like that it can be used in a limited way as a passive lift, possibly to assist for floor to chair transfers with a full sling. Website could be better for information. No good documentation or information about parts on the website.

Pros / Cons after testing

This worked better than any of the other stalifts  tested, but it is still not optimal. The biggest issue remains whether he can stand enough on his own. When the demo was done he was especially tired and had problems with his right hamstrings. Unless his standing ability improves, this does not look to be a good option, and the sales rep agreed. Gratefully, they allowed us to borrow it a few days and it did go better, but we do not think it will go well enough for him to use it on a daily basis, especially when tired.

ArjoHuntleigh Sara 3000

Options

Can use the Sara 3000 Standing Sling or Sara 3000 Transfer Sling.

Pros / Cons before testing

Looks good over all but not foldable. Did not like that an e-mail was required to download information. No good documentation or information about parts on the website.

Pros / Cons after testing

This lift is similar to the Journey, with similar problems. The leg supports are better than the Journey and are good overall, also the calf straps are good. He still has the same problem where his affected leg turns inside. He had a lot off pain while standing in his knee and was hanging quite a lot in it. Unless his standing ability improves, this does not look to be a good option, and the sales rep agreed. Overall, we liked working with ArjoHuntleigh, and would consider them for other equipment needs.

This lift was suggested by the ergo therapist Ellen because we explained that we thought the mast tilted backward on the Molift Rasier 2 was helpful to allow for a more natural raising motion.

Pros / Cons before testing

Overall it looks good for the placement of the mast. The support (tilvest) looks okay, but the cushions at the top may be difficult to get under the affected left side with contracture and spasms. Don’t like that it is like all of the other stalifts except the Hill-Rom Liko Sabina II, where he would not have the support outside his arms and be able to hold in the middle and will pull himself to the side causing pain. The support attachment points do not look secure. It also looks like his knee will go in the middle of the leg supports also causing pain. Overall design is klunky and heavy, electronics are old and overall design has hard edges possibly causing pain.

This lift is similar to others, with similar problems. The lifted tested was an older model James II, but we were told that the only significant differences were the the lack of an emergency switch, the leg spreaders being automatic and a smaller lead acid battery. The angle of the mast is better than all of the other lifts except the Molift Raiser, but he was still not able to fully stand.The leg supports are better than the Journey in that they do not cause as much pain, but they are less contoured than other lifts like the Liko Sabina II, causing his affected leg to turn even more to the inside. The vest was too bulky at the top, and was difficult with his affected side to put on him. We also did not like the Velcro insider fastener that got caught on his clothes, and the need to also use 2 buckles instead of just one. The support attachment points were easy to use and appeared secure enough. The foot plate was adequate for his wheelchair, but a bit too wide and high to fit easily like the Journey. The spreader legs are not contoured, and it takes up a lot of space and is difficult to fit by the toilet if they are made wide enough to get around his wheelchair. This will also be dangerous for caregivers tripping over them. We don’t like that it has a very large footprint and is very heavy. When being used it is extremely heavy for his partner to move him, due to a bad back. The large footprint makes it hard to get out of the way easy and fast if a manual transfer is needed for the toilet. He also required extra assistance during times when he normally does not need assistance in the bathroom when using the sink, because he kept getting caught up with his wheelchair in the stalift. Alhtough it was slightly easier for him to stand with this lift, he was hanging quite a lot in it even after further testing and trying different options. Even if his standing ability improves, this does not look to be a good option.Overall, we liked working with United Care, and would consider them for other equipment needs.

This was the first standing aid that we rented from Medipoint. It did not work at all because the lower legs were too wide to fit under the wheelchair and there was not adjustment possible.Even if the legs would have fit under, he would not been able to get close enough because the foot support is too wide for his wheelchair He was sitting too far away to be able to stand. There was no back support possible to help him stand and he as not able to keep his affected foot on the footplate. This standing aid definitely will not work.

Similar to the Bea, but offers better leg support and legs that widen manually. It looks like an interesting possibility. Want to see if they offer any kind of back support or leg belt. There is an option for it to be used in a wet environment, which would be necessary.

This lift is similar to the ArjoHuntleigh Sara Stedy, with similar problems. The paddles are flatter angle than the Sara Stedy, but we do not think that is necessarily a good thing, because he needs to stand from a lower position. We liked the larger casters.  It is very heavy and difficult to move around quickly. Unless his standing ability improves, this does not look to be a good option, which the sales rep agreed.

This was the first standing aid we did a long term rental of after the United Care Bea did not work.Overall we liked this standing aid and had hoped it would eventually work. The footplate is just a bit too large to fit between or under the wheelchair and makes it so it is too far away to stand properly.  If his standing ability was better, it would be our first choice. It is simple to use and gives him control over standing, which makes him much less stressed. It is also how he is familiar with standing with the standing bars at our old home. Even after more physio to try to stand better, he was still not able manage it safely after many attempts.This standing aid will not work.

Pros / Cons before testing

Simple to use, but requires good standing ability. The Raiser Strap+ might offer enough support, as long as standing position can be held long enough. Good adjustment for lower-leg support, but not as padded as i7500i. Like the Strap+ that can also be used for manual transfers, standing training, gait training, and possibly for transfers from the floor. Low weight and easy to assemble and disassemble for transport and storage. Can also be used for auto transfers.

His standing ability was not good enough to manage this device. It was difficult to place his feet on it because it is small and high and because of coordination issues. Although the Raiser Strap+ did help, he was not able to hold a standing position long enough. Also the lower-leg support did not have enough contour and support to hold his affected leg in place. This device was not recommended based on input from the manufacturer.
